TEXTURE / COLOR / TONE
Our story begins in flat muddy tones, closely layered on top of one another. Color is indicative of faded memories - a flash of better times. As Mari begins to unearth the puzzle pieces, the colors of an unnatural death emerge. Burnt sienna and golden rod mix with the grays and browns for our first glimpse of life. As the sisterhood unites, we start to feel its warmth take hold. The film takes on a palette of natural warm tones - a slow sunset, salt crusted on tires and our first true blue sky. When Mari finds her strength - a full spectrum can be seen. Glowing red brake lights, astro turf, the metallic glint of an earring, bouquets of sympathy flowers.
Mari Gilbert
Mari's appearance suggests the shape of a woman bearing a heavy burden. Sloped, soft shoulders, bangs that need a trim, roots that need to be touched up, and eye makeup that shows its wear. Her wardrobe is modest, and selected for efficiency rather than style. It is a uniform at times, and we get our biggest timeline cues from changes in makeup or jewelry. There are youthful elements added in - a comment on her economic status rather than age. We keep the visual weight on her neckline. Larger jewelry, turtlenecks and jacket collars.
Police Presence
Our first glimpses of law enforcement feel like an after thought. Isolated pockets of search party members help make it feel small. Logo's & patches are limited making it feel half hearted. As the investigation grows we see ranking members of police detectives and personnel - suits & ties mix in with uniformed officers and canine units. At it's fullest extent, we see the neon t shirts of volunteers set against a backdrop of protective suits.
